There are other good reasons to learn a little about hypoallergenic breeds. You may not be allergic, but you may choose a hypoallergenic dog out of consideration for a loved one, neighbor, or coworker who is. If you are allergic and not considering dog ownership, it will still be helpful to have a basic knowledge of the breeds. Then you will know when to stop and pet a furry friend and when to keep a safe distance.
Top Hypoallergenic Breeds, Large
Airedale Terrier: The Airedale is known for its playful intelligence. These dogs are very alert and intuitive, but may be stubborn and difficult to train. They are loyal family dogs, but need to be socialized with other pets and humans to avoid a slight aggressive streak. The Airedale is typically 56-61cm tall and has medium-length, wiry fur that is a rusty color. Their long, boxy faces are full of character.
Poodle: Poodles are one of the most popular hypoallergenic dog breeds. Too often stereotyped as silly or high-maintenance because of their elaborate show cuts, poodles are actually very intelligent, amiable and practical dogs. With regular trips to the groomer a poodle’s coat can be kept short and low-maintenance. Poodles are active dogs and make great partners for outdoor activities. However, be sure to keep them on a leash because of their propensity for bird chasing. Poodles come in a variety of sizes, from toy dog to 60 cm high, and have curly coats in a variety of colors.
Portuguese Water Dog: The Portuguese Water Dog was bred to aid fishermen by herding fish. They are very smart, creative and loving dogs who need a lot of attention. They have black, curly, non-shedding hair that can grow quite long, much like human hair. A tight, no-frills cut with occasional trimming of face and feet is the easiest way to keep up your Portuguese Water Dog. These dogs make great guide dogs for the deaf or blind.
Samoyed: The fluffy, white, cheerful, Samoyed can live up to 16 years, which is longer than many large dogs. They originated in Siberia, where they helped nomadic tribesman hunt, herd, and travel in the icy north. Samoyeds require a lot of attention and are very loyal.
Top Hypoallergenic Breeds, Small
Bichon Frise: The Bichon Frise is friendly and playful. This breed is a white furball with some creamy areas, especially around the face. They do not shed. They require everyday grooming unless their coat is cut short, in which case weekly grooming can be kept up between trips to get their coats trimmed. This breed may be difficult to house train. A similar breed is the Maltese.
Schnauzer: The Schnauzer was bred as a herding and guard dog and they are extremely intelligent, devoted, and active. Miniature and Standard Schnauzers are on the small side, but Giant Schnauzers are a different matter. Schnauzers have very little shedding.
Yorkshire Terrier: The Yorkshire terrier, often called a Yorkie, is a tiny dog often weighing less than seven or eight pounds. These dogs have orange and black human-like hair that can grow quite long. It is loyal to its master, with a happy disposition, but can become aggressive with other people and animals.
Beware the Mixed Breeds
In recent years, mixed breed dogs such as the ‘Labradoodle’ have become popular. These breeds may be more hypoallergenic than most, but not necessarily. It is hard to predict how you will react to these dogs until you have spent time with them, so it is best to arrange to visit with your potential new pooch before buying him.
